| Description | Workers remove soil from the interior of a sluice in an 8th century weir, which was used to regulate water flow into branch canals with moveable gates. The University of Chicago's Oriental Institute and the Directorate General of Antiquities of Iraq are managing the project as part of an extensive joint survey of the Diyālā River basin east and south of Baghdad, and the excavation of sections of two cities. On the Nahrawan irrigation canal, Oriental Institute archaeologists excavated a weir and a dam used for raising water levels for irrigation. |
